Obiettivi formativi
Le lezioni di Lingua e Letteratura Anglo-Americana B (Enjoyment and Understanding: The American Short Story in Literary and Cultural Contexts) tracceranno l’evoluzione del racconto americano dal primo Ottocento ai giorni nostri. Obiettivo essenziale di tale insegnamento è di porre lo studente in grado di comprendere appieno il significato di narrazioni brevi con riferimento alle tematiche e alle caratteristiche stilistiche.
This course will trace the evolution of the American Short Story from the early Nineteenth Century to the present. Students will deepen their understanding of the short story as a genre, perfect their skills in analyzing thematic and formal aspects of short stories, be able to place stories in their proper literary and cultural contexts.

Alla fine delle lezioni, lo studente dovrà dimostrare di aver acquisito gli strumenti necessari per una puntuale analisi di tutti i testi esaminati in classe e di altri due racconti scelti da un elenco suggerito dalla docente e preparati autonomamente.
At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills necessary for a thoughtful analysis of all the stories examined in class and of another two stories selected from a list of suggested texts which they prepare independently.

Modalità di insegnamento
Le lezioni, della durata di 36 ore complessive (6 CFU), saranno svolte in inglese. Per un proficuo svolgimento delle lezioni che favorisca l'attiva partecipazione degli studenti, all'inizio del corso saranno disponibili un'introduzione ai singoli autori, i racconti, varie interpretazioni critiche e ulteriori riferimenti bibliografici. Le registrazioni sonore dei racconti saranno rese disponibili su un servizio "Cloud".
This course (36 hours - six credits) will be conducted in English. Students are expected to prepare for each class session by reading the assigned texts and to participate actively in the class discussions. There will be a coursepack containing the texts of all the stories, introductions to the authors and critical commentaries. Recordings of the stories will be available on a cloud service.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
La verifica sarà svolta in forma orale in inglese o in italiano precisando che la lingua scelta dallo studente non influirà sulla valutazione finale. Il voto sarà espresso in trentesimi. Il colloquio orale prevede il commento critico di due dei racconti esaminati in classe e di uno dei racconti preparati autonomamente. L'analisi dei racconti, oltre a richiedere quanto appreso durante lo svolgimento delle lezioni e dalla lettura dei testi critici forniti dalla docente, tenderà a favorire coerenti commenti critici personali.
At the final oral exam students will be asked to analyze two of the stories discussed in class and one of the stories they prepared independently. Their analyses of the stories should be based on our class discussions, on their reading of the critical material in the coursepack and on their own ideas.
