Obiettivi formativi
Le lezioni di Lingua e Letteratura Anglo-Americana B (Sound and Sense: Reading American Poetry) costituiscono un’introduzione ai più significativi poeti americani dal primo Ottocento ai giorni nostri. Obiettivo essenziale di tale insegnamento è di porre lo studente in grado di poter analizzare vari testi poetici sottolineando le possibili interpretazioni e i peculiari aspetti culturali ed estetici.
This course will introduce students to works by some of the most important American poets from the early Nineteenth century to the present. During the course, students will perfect their skills in analyzing and interpreting poetry, with special emphasis on the particular formal aspects, thematic concerns and cultural significance of the various poems examined.

Alla fine delle lezioni, lo studente dovrà dimostrare di aver acquisito gli strumenti necessari per una puntuale analisi di tutti i testi esaminati in classe e di altre cinque poesie scelte da un elenco suggerito dalla docente e preparate autonomamente.
At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate that they have acquired the skills necessary for a thoughtful analysis of all the poems examined in class and of another five poems selected from a list of suggested texts which they prepare independently.

Modalità di insegnamento
Le lezioni, della durata di 36 ore complessive (6 CFU), saranno svolte in inglese. Per un proficuo svolgimento delle lezioni che favorisca l'attiva partecipazione degli studenti, all'inizio del corso saranno disponibili un'introduzione ai singoli autori, i testi poetici, varie interpretazioni critiche e ulteriori riferimenti bibliografici. Le registrazioni sonore delle poesie saranno rese disponibili su un servizio "Cloud."
This course (36 hours - six credits) will be conducted in English. Students are expected to prepare for each class session by reading the assigned texts and to participate actively in the class discussions. There will be a coursepack containing the texts of all the poems, introductions to the authors and critical commentaries. Recordings of the poems will be available on a cloud service.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
La verifica sarà svolta in forma orale in inglese o in italiano precisando che la lingua scelta dallo studente non influirà sulla valutazione finale. Il voto sarà espresso in trentesimi. Il colloquio orale prevede la traduzione e il commento critico di due o tre delle poesie esaminate in classe e di una delle poesie preparate autonomamente. L'analisi delle poesie, oltre a richiedere quanto appreso durante lo svolgimento delle lezioni e dalla lettura dei testi critici forniti dalla docente, tenderà a favorire coerenti commenti critici personali.
At the final oral exam students will be asked to analyze two or three of the poems discussed in class and one of the poems they prepared independently. Their analyses of the poems should be based on our class discussions, on their reading of the critical material in the coursepack and on their own ideas.
