Programma

Orari

22 ottobre - 7 novembre / 26 novembre - 5 dicembre.

LU-MA-ME ore 10.00-12.00, Palazzo Nuovo, seminario 1, IV piano

The workshop deals with a series of issues related to the study of  epigraphical documents in their material aspects of archaeological source. The main issues related to the making of an inscription will be analyzed here; among them: typologies of materials and supports; tools and techniques employed by ancient stone cutters; text ordering within the so-called writing field, presence of iconographies, numeral systems, punctuation marks, abbreviations, paleography and dating criteria. Further issues concerning the inscriptions (rasurae, re-writing, “felling of the stele”) or their placement in the urban space (connection with monuments, exposition places, finding in situ or extra situ, pierres errantes, epigraphical re-use) will be also considered. Moreover, the workshop will tackle some questions related to the fragmentarity of inscriptions (correct description of fragments) and the transcription of epigraphical texts (integration, diacritical marks for epigraphical editions). The main techniques of reproducing inscriptions (squeezes, photography, modifying of digital images) will be set out and practically realized. An overview of the most important electronic resources and digital bibliographic databanks for the study of Greek and Latin epigraphy will be presented to students. The workshop will include exercises and testing of the acquired knowledge, by means of visits to the city museums of archeology. During the workshop students will be asked to write an epigraphical form.

October the 22nd - November the 7th / November the 26th - December the 5th.
